Non-Human Intelligent Life and Spirituality, Part I: Developments in Disclosure and the Potential Impact on Religion

Dear readers, to avoid publishing an overly-long single article on this topic, I have split the post into two parts. This first part will cover the recent developments in the UFO/UAP space and the potential impact on religious doctrine if the existence of non-human intelligent species were officially confirmed. The second part will focus on ETs in the spirituality/new age community, plus discussion of aliens in spiritual literature. Enjoy!

A UFO Sighting in New Jersey

It’s New Jersey, 1973. The sun has just set on a clear, warm evening in May. Two teenage girls, Genie and Maria (both pseudonyms), are driving home from a high school concert. Their carefree discussion about the night’s events is interrupted by a strange light from above. Genie slows down and they both look up to see a huge, circular craft hovering above them. The craft is so large from their perspective that it fills the entire windshield of the car end to end. The craft is close enough that Genie can clearly see distinct windows that encircle the craft. The air is still and silent. Then suddenly and without acceleration, the craft takes off at an incredible rate of speed and disappears.

This is a true story as told to me by my mother, Genie (with some added literary details only to set the scene). On occasion over the years, I’ve asked her to retell the story, looking for changes in her recollection, but her testimony has always been the same set of rather matter-of-fact statements. Since I know my mother to be an honest, no-nonsense woman, I must accept that some UFO reports describe genuine sightings of anomalous craft, though not necessarily evidence of alien technology. The U.S. Military has been suspected of developing aerial technology that may be mistaken for an extraterrestrial craft. Whatever the origin, I do not, however, believe my mother and her friend were bedazzled by a rogue weather balloon, swamp gas, or a silent, low-flying helicopter.

Despite personally knowing a credible witness to the phenomenon, I’ve never been all that interested in pursuing the UFO phenomena. The subject is too broad and murky; obscured by layers of disinformation, paranoia, and perhaps even delusion. Looking for credible evidence in such a quagmire seems like an exercise in frustration. My interest lies in the search for life after death, not the search for the truth about UFOs, and I’ve been content to stay in my lane. Recently though, major developments in the UFO space in just the last few months have piqued my interest. While we wait to see if these developments unfold into anything substantial, I would like to consider the following questions:

  • How would the existence of non-human intelligent species (NHIs) integrate with existing religious doctrine?
  • Would the existence of aliens destroy religious belief on earth, as some have feared?
  • What information has been written about NHIs in spiritualist literature?

Now, I want to make this clear: the purpose of this article is not to argue one way or another about the origin of UFOs. I am just as curious as everyone else about what may be revealed, but since most of the claimed evidence is classified, we will have to wait until either NHIs indisputably reveal themselves or world governments decide to fully disclose their research.

Before we tackle the questions above, let’s first review the recent developments in the UFOspace that have captured the world’s attention. The following paragraphs are intentionally brief, but links are provided to the original reports and documents. Please also check the references and recommended reading at the end of the post for additional interviews and podcast discussions about the recent developments.

December 2017 | New York Times Article Reveals AATIP

In 2017, the New York Times published Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: the Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. Program, authored by noted UFO investigator Leslie Kean with Ralph Blumenthal and Helene Cooper. This explosive report exposed the existence of a secretive government-funded UFO research task-force called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP. The report also introduced the public to the term ‘Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena’ (UAP) chosen to replace the highly stigmatized term ‘UFO’ in official communications. The Defense Department did not previously acknowledge the existence of AATIP and claimed it had been shut down in 2012. This is partially true; funding for the program was revoked in 2012, but the investigations continued unfunded until the program’s director, Luis Elizondo, resigned in protest against “excessive secrecy and internal opposition.” The report included video evidence of alleged UAPs encountered by Navy Airmen which the U.S. Navy later admitted was genuine.

August 2022 | First AARO Report on UAPs

In 2022, the Department of Defense in coordination with the Director of National Intelligence announced the creation of AARO, the All-Domain Anomalous Resolution Office dedicated to the identification and study of anomalous phenomena that may present a threat to military interests. In 2022, a report was released that indicated that AARO studied over 500 UAP incidents, revealing most to be related to identifiable causes. However, the report also revealed 171 UAP which “have demonstrated unusual flight characteristics or performance capabilities, and require further analysis.”

June 5, 2023 | Intelligence Officer David Grusch Alleges US Government Involved in UAP Crash Retrieval

On June 5, 2023, Journalists Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal published a report in The Debrief of allegations made by former Intelligence Officer David Grusch that the U.S. Government has participated in the recovery of craft, materials and bodies of alien origin.

On June 11, 2023, NewsNation aired an interview of David Grusch by Australian Investigative Journalist Russ Coulthart. The intelligence community Inspector General has found his claims to be both ‘credible’ and ‘urgent’ and Congress is preparing for possible hearings to discuss the allegations.

June 12, 2023 | Disclosure 2.0 Press Conference with Dr. Steven Greer

On June 12, 2023, Dr. Steven Greer, a former ER doctor-turned-ufologist presented Disclosure 2.0 at the National Press Club, where he facilitated the presentation of testimony from military and government witnesses to the UAP phenomenon. Dr. Greer has claimed that unacknowledged secret access programs are covering up the existence of UAP technology. In addition, Greer believes a false-flag operation to cast aliens as a threat is imminent. Human-built facsimiles of UAPs would be used to stage such an invasion. The operation would be used to consolidate power and money and justify the creation of space-based weapons to ‘defend earth’.

Although Greer and Grusch represent two (possibly contentious) sides of the UFO/UAP disclosure issue, both spoke of the alleged cover-up and suppression of advanced scientific technology engineered from recovered non-human materials. According to Dr. Greer, some of these technologies could eliminate climate change, poverty and the energy crisis if shared responsibly with civilian scientists.

June 24, 2023 | Intelligence Authorization Act with Amnesty Provision for Revealing NHI technology

On June 24, the Senate Intelligence Committee unanimously passed their Intelligence Authorization Act for 2024 which includes an amnesty provision for defense contractors or corporate entities who may be in possession of said craft or materials of non-human origin to disclose their possession to AARO (the Government’s UAP office) within 60 days.

Let’s sum all of this up: After 80 years of denials and disinformation campaigns, the U.S. Government has now been forced to admit that UFO/UAPs exist and remain unexplainable. Additionally, the U.S. Congress has:

  • Secured funding for the examination of this phenomena through AARO
  • Passed legislation to protect whistleblowers and release them from NDAs
  • Installed provisions to allow military personnel to disclose interactions with UAP without the fear of stigma or retaliation
  • Passed into law an amnesty provision requiring military and private entities to disclose possession of non-human materials
  • Announced that the House Oversight Committee will hold hearings on the allegations made by Mr. Grusch and others

If it is revealed definitively that a non-human intelligent species has been visiting earth, there would be a wide-variety of initial reactions. People will look to institutions of power for guidance, so the messaging by government authorities, media outlets, and religious leaders would drive much of how society on a whole reacts to the news in the short term. The effect that such a discovery may have on organized religion will be slower to manifest as people try to integrate this new information into their worldview. For some, the existence of NHIs will change very little about their personal cosmology. In others, the news would cause a violent case of cognitive dissonance that will demand resolution.

The good news for church leaders is that theologians have been considering the impact of the existence of non-human intelligent life for centuries already, and have already outlined both the doctrinal issues that would arise and their potential resolutions.

The Existence of Non-Human Intelligence and Organized Religion

Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism are relatively untroubled by the potential existence of aliens. Judaism, the foundation of the three Abrahamic religions, places no constraints on the creativity of God. There is even a reference in the Talmud to a planet or star called Maroz that is inhabited.

The discovery of ETs would pose no more of a threat to Judaism than would the discovery of a new species of rabbit.

https://www.chabad.org

Islamic thought on the matter is a little more diverse, with some Muslims believing that the Qu’ran does not provide a definite answer on the question of extraterrestrial life and others who interpret scriptural passages to mean that Allah has indeed created other Earth-like planets and may one day even broker first contact between intelligent species.

Asian religions may be the most accepting of alien life of all. Hinduism, with its diverse cosmology, need only consider the possibility of interplanetary reincarnation. Buddhism, which has always been more of a philosophy than a religion, is equally as accepting of a cosmos filled with intelligent life.

Christianity, with 2.3 billion adherents, would have the most difficulty incorporating non-human intelligent species into their doctrines. Acceptance of new doctrines or scriptural interpretations to integrate NHIs theologically would vary dramatically across the Christian continuum.

Conservative or fundamental sects currently deny aliens outright. According to their interpretation of the Biblical creation narrative, the earth and its inhabitants are unique in all of the cosmos. Fundamental Christians also conflate belief in aliens with belief in evolution, a scientific theory they regard with equal disdain. If non-human intelligent life were proved beyond doubt, fundamentalist Christians may have an immediate and strongly negative reaction. Aliens, regardless of their true intent, may be cast as demons or beings excluded from God’s grace; soulless and damned.

Modernist Christian branches are likely to be more open-minded to the idea of non-human intelligent species, but tricky theological questions must still be answered in light of existing doctrine. Before we review the problematic areas, let’s review the most widely accepted Christian theology.

The Christian Theology (In a Nutshell)

Christian cosmology begins with the creation of the earth over seven days. God creates the first humans, Adam and Eve, to dwell in perfect harmony with God and nature in a paradise called Eden. God has but one rule for the couple: you may eat the fruit of any tree except the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve is tempted to eat the fruit by a serpent who promises that she will ‘become like God’ if she eats the fruit. After Eve eats the fruit, she shares it with Adam. God learns of their disobedience and they are cast out of Eden into a life of struggle, illness, pain and death. This is when sin first came into the world. As decedents of Adam and Eve, all humankind have inherited their ‘original sin’ and we cannot reconcile ourselves to God in our current fallen state.

However, because God so loved the world, He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be crucified as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of mankind. Jesus is believed to have been miraculously resurrected bodily three days later as proof of his divinity. Christians also believe the life, death and resurrection of Jesus fulfilled Jewish prophecies that foretell the coming of a Messiah who will redeem mankind and usher in God’s kingdom.

The Gospel of the incarnation of Jesus is set into a larger struggle between God and Satan, a fallen angel who challenged God’s superiority. Satan has been causing all sorts of trouble for humans since he was cast out of heaven, but this is only temporary. Eventually, Christians believe that Christ will return to defeat Satan and destroy all non-believers in a cataclysmic battle that will raze the earth to its foundation. When the dust settles, Christ will judge the living and the dead assigning each to either eternal bliss or eternal torment.

Alien-Jesus, The Planet-Hopping Savior?

It’s a fantastic drama, but one that might be complicated by the revelation that other intelligent species exist through the universe. Consider the problem with the sacrifice of Jesus to enact the salvation of mankind. Christians believe that all humans inherited original sin from Adam and Eve. The salvation of humans only became possible through the physical incarnation and sacrifice of Jesus. If intelligent life is found on other planets, should Christians expect that each had an Adam and Eve who fell from grace and a Jesus that travels from planet to planet incarnating and dying for the salvation of each species?

Just as Jesus is human like you and I, you would find an alien-specific Jesus.

Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary professor Ted Peters

Another solution is to consider that Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross provided salvation to all intelligent species, not just humans. On the other hand, perhaps other intelligent species have not disobeyed God in the first place and therefore don’t require salvation. Talk about being the red-headed stepchild of the family. Yikes.

The podcast Capturing Christianity discussed the alien issue in depth with two theologians who co-wrote a paper on this topic. The host, Cameron Bertuzzi, brought up a good point: The biggest issue may not be with any one particular doctrine, but with the whole Christian narrative. Aliens just don’t fit well into the plot. If aliens visiting earth are part of God’s plan, where in the drama are they placed where it makes any sense? It’s like a bad movie where you think you are watching a historical drama, then boom! Aliens arrive, and everyone groans. The Bible has already told Christians how the story ends; to retrofit aliens into the story arc may be a stretch for some believers.

If non-human intelligent life were a proven reality, casual or culturally religious people may find their faith weakened, but I suspect deeply religious people will find a way to rationalize this new information without abandoning their faith. The Vatican’s chief astronomer, Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, a Jesuit priest, has embraced the idea of extraterrestrials as part of God’s vast creation.

Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can’t put limits on God’s creative freedom.

Atheists too have their sides to take. Human history has demonstrated how poorly indigenous people have fared when faced with technologically superior visitors. Famed astrophysicist Steven Hawking was quoted as saying “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”

Conversely, Dr. Steven Greer insists that aliens must be benevolent because they’ve never openly attacked earth. While the government is allegedly preparing for an all-out intergalactic war, Greer believes that it is critical that enlightened humans communicate messages of peace directly to visiting aliens. He regularly holds CE-5 events where groups of people gather in large open spaces at night to commune with the alien consciousness and convince UAP craft to appear. There is even an app that for $9.99 will “assist you in making peaceful contact with extraterrestrial civilizations” using the CE-5 protocol.

Would you try connecting with NHIs? I would; I’m always up for an interesting experiment. Unfortunately, I live in New Jersey, and no one visits “the armpit of America” on purpose twice – even aliens. Now, New York City? That’s a different story. If you’ve ever taken the subway late at night, then you’d probably already met one. At least they’d be welcome in Brooklyn. A new species of rabbit, indeed.

In Part II, we will continue our discussion of non-human intelligences by looking at ET channeling in the spiritualism/new-age community as well as reviewing NHIs in spiritual literature. Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Please feel free to share your opinion in the comments. See you in Part II!

  1. Have you ever heard of the work of John Mack? Perhaps it will be in your next post, but he was a somewhat famous psychiatrist who took up studying UFO abductees in the 80’s or 90’s. His work is quite interesting, in that he seems to draw a parallel between alien abduction and spiritual awakening – as though these people, who were previously considered looney and crazy, were actually just spiritually awakened by the abduction experiences, and then went on to live deeply spirituality-oriented lives, which just buttressed the appearance of insanity. I read about him second-hand in one of Graham Hancock’s books.

    1. Hi Angela, thanks so much for the recommendation! In not familiar with much literature in this genre, so I appreciate learning more about it. I kind of stayed away from the abduction issue because, well, I’m just not sure what to think about them. But maybe I should take another look. There could be some interesting parallels that I’m missing as you mentioned. Perhaps comparing the after effects of NDEs. I had always thought that abductees viewed the experience negatively but perhaps that is an over generalization. Thanks so much for the comment. Take care, Jenn

      1. If I remember correctly, the negative sides of the experience were likened to similar negative experiences in shamanic initiations, something about being disassembled, or having your body somehow opened and your parts manipulated… I can’t remember exactly how it was connected. But yes, similar to NDE effects, the abductees went on to expanded consciousness and insight, etc. I am of the dark mysticism side of spiritual world, so to me, negative doesn’t necessary mean bad or somehow preclude the spiritual significance.

        1. That’s a good point and I agree, “bad” in human terms often brings positive changes. I guess I had not considered that an experience that may have caused trauma would lead to enhanced spiritual growth, but that it itself is a limiting belief. I probably wouldn’t think the same about distressing NDEs, so that’s bias on my part. Thank you for expanding my perspective. ☺️

  2. We, humans, think in human parameters. Aliens must be corporal, having some sort of visible form and using hardware to get around. When we thought we were all that existed as the center of the universe when a non-ordinary being appeared we called them angels or demons or elves etc. They could materialize and dematerialize as part of their nature. Now that we know we’re not the center and only planet we call them aliens. From their non-homocentric viewpoint, we’re aliens or just part of the big universal family.
Asides from NDErs who’ve been escorted to other planets oobe’s like Emanuel Swedenborg and Robert Monroe have encountered non-corporeal intelligences. My point is that they are with us invisibly all along. Most people, but not all people, just can’t see them.
As a side note, there is a medieval painting of a German town, Nuremberg, showing what appears to be a battle in the sky. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1561_celestial_phenomenon_over_Nuremberg

    1. Hi Silrak! I got your comment, thanks for also emailing it. That picture you posted is really interesting as is the story that goes along with it. I have never heard of the ‘sky battle of Nuremberg’. As to your point about ‘aliens’, I agree – at a certain point, we are just part of the universal consciousness. I think the fact that we align ourselves with humanity is a useful fiction to help us further our spiritual progress. Ultimately, if ETs were to make themselves known, learning of their beliefs and understanding of reality would help humanity re-consider some of the more egregious belief systems; a new perspective would put our adolescent understand in sharp relief, I’m sure. Thanks so much for commenting. Take care. 🙂 – Jenn

  3. Hi Jenn, another thought provoking article by such a talented and gifted writer ! My belief mirrors yours exactly, especially your reply about what the (aliens/otherworldly) entities would understand about like you said, reality, consciousness, their concept of God etc Other than some weird YouTube videos there doesn’t seem to be a lot of credible information or sources from those well versed in spirituality about the subject of what their (aliens) beliefs are and even then that probably wouldn’t be universal or the same from different species of aliens . . . So happy to see a article from you and looking forward to part 2, you’re just the best ! Take care Jenn . . . . . Rich

    1. Rich, so good to hear from you! You are too kind to me. Thank you for always being so caring and supporting, it means so much to me. Part 2 should be interesting.. I have five or six paragraphs written so far, but wow – there is a lot to go through! I never thought that there was much in the way of information about non-human intelligent species in the quote-unquote “standard literature” whatever that means, but there is more than I anticipated. Silrak mentioned Swedenborg in his comment, and dear Emmanuel is going to kick off the topic in Part 2. Swedenborg had much to say, at least about the souls of alien species. Seth doesn’t discuss much about aliens, but I found two comments seven years apart that explain why ET craft vary so much in shape and size – really interesting in light of the newest info on UAPs, considering especially that Jane Roberts channeled the material in the 60s and 70s. Anyway, I’ll be working on part 2 this weekend and hope to have it out soon! I know the topic is a bit off-brand for me, but it’s fun to look at different stuff from time to time. Anyway, I’m rambling. Rich, thank you again for being a good friend. Much love, Jenn

  4. Hi Jenn,
Excellent writing as always. The alien thing – hard to know what to believe. For insight on different bloggers I have followed the Facebook group: Afterlife Topics and Metaphysics shares the author’s supposed dialogues with alien groups surrounding our earth, ie Ashtar, Pleaidaian. I’ve never heard of these groups before. He claims to channel them. (who knew that copper dousing rods could lead to such extensive communications?)I am not sure what to make of his collections of writings, but many who follow his page, believe he is in touch with them, and some in the group claim to channel them too. Cyrus Kirkpatrick is also an author of many books on the Afterlife and the Paranormal. HIs other site is the Multi-verse Institute. Paul Hamden, a medium, claims to come communicate with the Zetas. I am not sure what to make of his writings as well, but they have photos and documentation they claim point to evidence of their encounters. Although I am not sure what to believe, the writings are numerous and very detailed. Its hard to imagine they could make this stuff up- yet people can and will. However, I do find their work compelling. Just thought I’d share their names to add to the list of resources. Again, I am not entirely sold on what they say, but there’s enough to grant me pause. The fact that the US government is acknowledging ET’s and dedicating commissions for discovery and disclosure is interesting. I am glad you have acknowledged the the groups who would attempt to profit off this new found evidence by trying to manipulate public response. Again, yet another example of how opportunistic our species is. Frankly, if there are aliens, I’d be encouraging them to wait, we still are not civil and enlightened enough to deal with them. Check their sites out as they are interesting reads.

    1. Hi Amanda, thank you so much for the recommendations. I am familar with Cyrus. I have enjoyed his two books (I think he wrote two, unless he’s published something new). I am 100% with you about not knowing quite what to make of the ET channeling space. Some part of me wants to believe that no one would go to such lengths to perpetrate a fraud, though the logical part of me knows better. I’ve seen some things that look pretty genuine and others that are just cringe-worthy. I was surprised to find out while researching Part 2 that the Law of One channeling, which I find to be of high quality, is technically an ET channeling – well, they are interdimensional species that form a galactic federation of planets (not sure of the exact wording). Regarding the greedy industrial-military complex, have you watched anything put out by Dr. Greer? His documentary “Unacknowledged” which you can watch for free on his youtube channel is quite eye-opening. I’m actually afraid to believe what he says – I can feel my mind pushing back against it because if what he says is true, we are in for a hell of ride in the future. You mentioned that if aliens exist that they should wait – yes – I totally agree. I wish we could put up some kind of billboard in space that says, “Still in kindergarten. Please come back in 5,000 years once we’ve learned to share and be nice”. Thanks again for the comment and the recommendations. I will check them out for sure. Jenn

  5. I find the idea that we are the only intelligent species in the entire universe to be silly and even laughable: if all this was created – whether directly or indirectly – by an intelligent creator, the idea of making such a mind-bogglingly huge universe and then creating intelligent life on just one tiny planet in an ordinary system inside an average galaxy out of roughly 200 billion is absurd. If beings from other worlds did come to ours – and assuming they were not interested in conquering or enslaving us – I would love to learn more about them, their cultures, their beliefs, technology, and especially their religious views and how they evolved over the course of their civilizations. Perhaps they started out like ours as dogmatic and threatening, then gradually evolved to become more progressive and more open as time went on.

The question of how the Christian faith would react is definitely a puzzler, but I would point out to any believers who would freak out about learning that ETs are real, that Christ specifically said that the way to achieve eternal life/salvation is to love God and love others; that criteria can apply to every being on every world in every galaxy, so if a benevolent extraterrestrial civilization came to Earth who met those two qualifications, then the meeting could be one very beneficial to us as a species.

  6. Below is the only reference that I have actually found of “a man from a different planet” who was actually present at spiritualist seances during the Victorian Era. It also talks in the book about a LARGE arm manifesting during their seances….supposedly that of “William E. Richards.”
There are, however, many references in spirit communications through physical and mental mediumship that talk about people of various characteristics living on different planets like Mars for example. Spiritualists knew about “aliens” during the Victorian Era long before it came into the public awareness a century later.

  8. Hi Jenn
Glad you’re getting into this issue which has taken up most of my time for years.
Many researchers these days disregard the ET hypothesis and regard the phenomena as extra-dimensional (with a physical aspect perhaps like physical Spiritualistic phenomena)
Certainly many abductees have had NDEs and many experiencers develop psychic abilities and some report seeing dead relatives aboard the so called craft!
And please research the hitchhiker effect which seems to work like some kind of psychic virus where experiencers such as those at Skinwalker Ranch find poltergeist events when they return home and it seems to spread to friends and neighbours too.
Maybe you’ll regret getting into this crazy scene Jenn!
But welcome to a mad world…..
